Jamie Wheeler-Matlock

I am Austen's mother. Although  my daughter was diagnosed at age seven with high functioning autism, she has clearly been autistic since birth. Following high school, we quickly discovered the dearth of opportunities for adults with autism. I plan to use my "mom" skills as well as my decades-long experience as an English professor to help create a better life for our daughters and sons.

I am Austen's stepfather. Like my wife, we quickly learned how few and dissatisfying the opportunities are for adults with autism. I hold a degree in psychology and have also been a professor for many years. I believe my experience teaching and tutoring people on the spectrum, as well as my love for games, fun, and movies will bring a good mix of skills to our program.

I am Jamie's mother and Austen's grandmother. I am eager to help with Austen's Autistic Adventures! I am retired but my previous careers were "people centered," including fifteen years as a kindergarten teacher followed by nearly 25 years working in mental health fields. I am confident that my lifetime of skills and love for people with autism will be useful in making our program a success.
